Description:

The Toledo Storm was not the original minor league hockey team in Toledo. Prior to the Toledo Storm, there was the Toledo Golddiggers (1974-1986). There were a couple of other franchises before the Golddiggers, but none that really deserve any notoriety like the Golddiggers. The Golddiggers were famous for their rough style of play, and one particular instance when a fan climbed over the boards and proceeded to beat up an opposing team's player. Picking the tradition back up in 1990, the Toledo Storm didn't skip a beat in the tradition of tough guy hockey that Toledo breeds. As a surprise to everyone, the Toledo Storm won the Riley Cup (now called the Kelly Cup) two of its first three seasons in existence. Over the next couple of years attendance died off and it looked like the Red Wings minor league team was going to have to fold. Making major cutbacks (and restructuring) has allowed the Toledo Storm to scrape by. Recently, the city of Toledo struck a deal to move the Toledo Storm from their current location (probably the worst rink in America) to a new arena that will be constructed downtown, close to 5/3 Field (home of the Mud Hens). One can only hope that the Toledo Storm will share the same success that the Mud Hens embraced when they moved to a state-of-the-art stadium in the heart of downtown.
