Toledo St. John's Jesuit captured the OHSAA State Boys Ice Hockey Championship today, beating Parma Padua 6-4.
St. John's beat perennial hockey power Hunting Valley University School in the semi-final 5-3 yesterday, before putting on another scoring show today.
The championship game got off to a blazing start with 5 first period goals. Toledo St. John's struck first, with a pair of goals by Hauenstein and Morris. Parma Padua answered only 22 seconds later with a goal of their own. Before the end of the first period, Hauenstein struck again for St.John's, while Parma returned the favor a few minutes later.
Although slowed down, the scoring did not stop there. St. John's used the second period to build on their lead by scoring two goals while shutting down Parma's offense. Heldt netted the first goal, a mere 28 seconds into the period, while Johnson put in the other goal in the period.
With a 5-2 lead, St. John's star of the game, Hauenstein, score the first goal of the third period to give himself a hat trick. Parma did mount a minor comeback, scoring twice, but it was not enough to overcome the overwhelming 4 goal deficit which faced them.
Toledo St. John's last appeared in the state finals in 1999. That team beat Bowling Green 7-0, but the title was taken away for having an ineligible player on the roster.
